The pearl in Saxony’s crown

Like a pearl, Weesenstein grew layer by layer. The castle, which has stood over the Mueglitz Valley for nearly 700 hundred years, has been often partly demolished and rebuilt according to prevailing contemporary tastes so that it has varied stylistic elements from the Gothic to the Classical periods. Thus did a curiosity among Saxon palaces arise,it grew downwards into the valley over the centuries, and occasionally was too much for its owners. Here, in his favourite residence, the gifted Prince Johann worked on his translation of Dante‘s Divine Comedy before he became king of Saxony.

Today visitors can discover his stairwell with its nooks and crannies; on the fifth floor they come across a horse‘s stable while the noble chambers from the 18th and 19th centuries with their wall coverings can be found one floor below the cellar.

The ”Monk‘s Way“ is said to be haunted by the lost ghost of a former palace resident. Perhaps it is the illusion-filled façade paintings which prevent him from finding peace in this confusion – in this unusual palace even the windows can often be only an illusion, for every third is only a painting.

In short: Whoever enjoys mazes and the unexpected will find adventure enough in the peculiar residence of King Johann. Afterwards a walk in the palace park, a visit to the restaurant ”Königliche Schlossküche“ or a tankard of Weesenstein Schlossbraeu - a traditional beer which originated in the 16th century -can guarantee the chance to recover.
